Bioplastics, Biodegradables and Natural Biobased Additives in the New Zealand Plastics Industry

NEW ZEALAND BIOPLASTICS QUESTIONNAIRE

Bioplastics, biodegradables and natural biobased additives in the New Zealand plastics industry The market penetration of bioplastics in the global plastics industry is expected to grow from less than 100,000 tonnes a few years ago to greater than 1 million tonnes around 2010.

In order to ensure the New Zealand plastics industry plays an active role in this fast growing bioplastics market, and to help NZ manufacturers in this sector, Scion is establishing a Bioplastics Research Group. The purpose of this questionnaire is to gather anonymous data on the use and issues of bioplastics, biodegradables, and biobased (natural biobased additives), and to ascertain the wider level of interest from NZ manufacturers in joining a Bioplastics Research Group.

The Group aims to facilitate uptake and use of bioplastics, biodegradable plastics and biobased additives in NZ manufacturing. This will be achieved via dissemination of information on global trends and development, and through innovation and co-working with industry partners. Scion has been undertaking research in bioplastics for more than seven years, already working with several NZ plastics manufacturers, and accordingly is well placed to manage and coordinate the Bioplastics Research Group.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could spend five minutes completing the questions below by Friday 29 June 2007. All respondents will receive a summary of all the data collected and will be entered into a prize draw for a case of wine, (winner to be notified in July 2007).

Please note: - we distinguish between: '

Biodegradable - predominant mechanism is enzymatic/microorganism induced decomposition and
Oxo-degradable - degradation via prodegradant additives to conventional plastics, inducing accelerated oxidation.
